Peter Obi’s kinsmen condemn attack on presidential hopeful, call for investigation

Youths of Agulu community in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State under the aegis of Agulu Youth Development Committee have condemned Tuesday’s attack on Mr Peter Obi.

The youths who are kinsmen of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential hopeful expressed their thoughts in a press release made available to journalists in Awka, Anambra State Capital, calling for investigation into the act.

Obi had been attacked in Benin City, Edo State on Tuesday during a political event by his party, by persons described as political thugs, who shot directly at attendees, while also chasing after the vehicle that whisked away the former governor.

In a press release by its chairman and secretary, Eric-Kenny Maduagwu and Egoh Chamberlain, the group said the incident underscores the worrisome dimension of politics being introduced by the ruling party in Edo State.

Part of the release read: “We condemn in entirety, the unfortunate assassination attempt on His Excellency, Mr Peter Obi today, during his visit to Edo State.

“Any attempt on the life of Peter Obi will spell doom for the country as the Nigerian masses will surprise the government with a volcanic protest and the whole nation will not wish for the consequences.

“The incident underscores the dimension of politics that is being introduced by the ruling party in the state, and we considers it unacceptable.

“The Edo State Government either directly or indirectly is responsible for this attack through the inciting comments they have made against His Excellency Mr Peter Obi in the recent past.

“The Edo State Government must now appreciate that once the government makes inflammatory comments, there are consequences, as some government sympathizers and loyalists can leverage on that to act, thinking that’s the interest of the government.

“The Government of Edo state must therefore prove their innocence. They must rise up to the occasion and launch a full scale investigation to unravel the perpetrators of this heinous act and ensure they are brought to book.

“We also call on the federal government and the Nigerian police force to intensify efforts on the protection of lives and properties, especially during this election period.”
