    Anambra begins enforcement of environmental law, to fine defaulters N5m

    Anambra State Government says it has commenced enforcement of all environmental laws in the state.

    The Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, announced this in a statement he made available to journalists.

    The statement noted that defaulters would be fined N20,000 to N5 million depending on the category of their offense. He also stated that the fines are categorized under individuals and corporate organizations.

    The statement read in part: “Accordingly, all public and private buildings without functional catchment pits, drainage systems, or any approved means of stormwater control will attract strict penalties.

    “The indiscriminate disposal of sachet water nylons, PET bottles, plastics, or any other waste materials at locations other than designated litter points is strictly prohibited.

    “Anyone caught dropping refuse indiscriminately on roads, expressways, or into drainages will be arrested, prosecuted, and fined.

    “Offenders will be fined and prosecuted in accordance with the law, with penalties ranging thus – Individuals ₦20,000 to ₦1,000,000, Corporate organizations: ₦100,000 to ₦5,000,000.”
