2027: Labour Party rolls out nationwide membership reboot, targets 10 million

    Published on

The Labour Party has formally launched an ambitious nationwide membership revalidation and registration drive aimed at mobilising over 10 million Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The initiative was unveiled in Abuja on Wednesday by the Senator Nenadi Usman–led Interim National Working Committee (INWC), alongside the inauguration of a 15-member Steering Committee charged with repositioning the party and restoring its credibility after months of internal disputes.

Speaking at the ceremony, Senator Usman said the party was determined to surpass its 2023 electoral performance and offer Nigerians a credible alternative amid fears of a creeping one-party dominance.

“Our party, like other opposition platforms, has gone through intense challenges and distractions. Most of these issues have been decisively resolved by the courts, while the remaining ones are before the judiciary. We are confident justice will prevail,” she said.

She explained that the membership exercise was both strategic and necessary as the party prepares for another election cycle.

“As we approach the next election season, the Labour Party must reposition, reorganise and strengthen itself for the responsibilities ahead. That is why we are formally launching this membership revalidation and registration exercise today,” she stated.

Usman noted that expanding and consolidating the party’s membership base had remained a top priority since the current leadership assumed office, but legal distractions delayed its rollout.

“With the launch today and the approved timetable, we will recover lost ground and emerge stronger, more united and better prepared,” she said.

She urged existing members to revalidate their membership and called on Nigerians who believe in good governance, social justice and accountability to join the party.

According to her, the exercise will run across all wards, local government areas and states of the federation until January 20, 2026.

National Secretary of the party, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, said the 15-man committee, chaired by Abia State Deputy Governor, Engr Ikechukwu Emetu, would oversee membership revalidation, congresses and preparations for national elections under the supervision of INEC.

He disclosed that membership registration and revalidation would take place from December 16 to January 10, ward congresses on January 13, local government congresses on January 17, state congresses on January 24, zonal congresses on January 31, and the national convention on February 28.

Chairman of the Steering Committee, Engr Emetu, pledged to work tirelessly to reconnect with Nigerians and rebuild the party’s grassroots strength.

“This is not just about numbers; it is a national call to action to strengthen democracy and give voice to the people,” he said, calling on party stakeholders and supporters to rally behind the initiative.
