Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister begins African tour in Nigeria

    Published on

Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Sharren Haskel, arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday for a three-day visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties, in what is the latest push by Israel to deepen its diplomatic engagement across Africa.

Her trip comes at a time of heightened international debate over Israel’s role on the continent, with some nations, led by South Africa, voicing strong criticism, while others continue to nurture close cooperation based on shared strategic interests and religious ties.

“In a period when Israel faces unprecedented security threats, this dialogue offered a vital opportunity to share our perspective with a country that also understands the reality of combating terrorism. Together, we can use this understanding to build cooperation that enhances the security and prosperity of both nations,” Haskel said.

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, said the two countries share common values and challenges.

“By strengthening our cooperation, particularly in innovation and sustainable development, we can create a future of peace and prosperity for our peoples,” Odumegwu-Ojukwu said.

While in Abuja, Haskel visited an Israeli innovation centre and held meetings with Christian leaders in a country with an estimated 60 million pro-Israel Christians. Known for championing religious diplomacy, Haskel earned the nickname ‘the Golda of Africa’ for her role in expanding Israel’s partnerships on the continent.

Her Nigeria visit is part of a broader African tour that will include South Sudan, in what will be the first official Israeli delegation to the country. Over the past year, Haskel has visited Gabon, Malawi, Ghana, and Ethiopia, and has been involved in efforts to maintain Israel’s observer status in the African Union.

Israel’s diplomatic links with Africa date back to 1958, when then Foreign Minister Golda Meir toured the continent, laying the foundation for MASHAV, Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation.
