Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said Lagos has empowered more than 30,000 women and young people with practical skills through its 19 skills acquisition centres in the last five years.

He gave the figure on Thursday during the graduation ceremony for 5,309 beneficiaries of the 2024/2025 skills acquisition programme run by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA).

The training, according to the governor, is part of efforts to fight poverty and promote entrepreneurship across the state. Graduates received starter kits and certificates after being trained in areas including vulcanising, welding, aluminum fabrication, carpentry, catering, barbing, hairdressing, bead and hat making, photography, and makeup artistry.

“This ceremony is more than a celebration; it represents potential and a brighter future for the graduates of our skill centres. We are committed to empowering women and youths to change their lives for the better,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He praised the efforts of WAPA and its commissioner, Mrs Bolaji Dada, for supporting vulnerable groups in Lagos.

“You have gained practical, life-changing skills and the tools to rise above poverty. Use them well, become ambassadors of this programme and inspire others,” he added.
