Honour deal or face strike, ASUU tells Taraba govt

    Published on

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Taraba State University has issued a fresh warning of strike action, citing the state government’s failure to honour key aspects of a previously signed agreement.

Speaking to journalists in Jalingo on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, the Chairperson of the ASUU branch, Dr. Garba Mbave Joshua, accused the state of breaching the Memorandum of Action (MoA) signed on January 17, 2025.

The agreement, he said, included monthly disbursements of ₦50 million for Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) , a commitment that has not been met since February.

“This continued non-compliance has broken the trust between both parties. It shows a worrying disregard for the welfare of university lecturers who have served with dedication,” Joshua stated.

He also criticised the government’s handling of the university’s pension scheme, describing the lack of structure and implementation as a further slight to the academic community.

Outstanding salary arrears and the government’s silence on a proposed stakeholder meeting to develop a payment plan were also raised as major concerns.

Joshua warned that if urgent action is not taken, the union may be left with no choice but to resume the strike it had previously suspended.

While acknowledging Governor Agbu Kefas’ push for free education in the state, ASUU stressed that quality learning cannot be achieved without prioritising the welfare of lecturers.

“We are not against the government or its programmes, but we cannot continue to work under conditions that undermine our dignity and violate our rights,” he said, calling on the governor to personally intervene to prevent a total shutdown of academic activities.
