The Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has called for a more proactive approach to disaster management.
According to a statement on Thursday, the former Governor of Anambra State made the call in respect of the recent flood disaster in Yola, Adamawa State.
In the call on governments at all levels in the country, Obi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and injuries sustained in the incident, stressing that the tragedy is yet another grim reminder of the urgent need for serious investment in disaster preparedness and infrastructure.
“My heart goes out to the families of the latest disaster who have lost loved ones and to all those injured in the tragic flood in Yola. This is another painful reminder of the urgent need for serious investment in disaster preparedness, environmental protection, and urban infrastructure across Nigeria,” he said.
Obi commended the prompt response of the Adamawa State Government, the state police command, and other relevant agencies involved in rescue efforts.
He, however, noted that such disasters must no longer be treated as fleeting headlines.
“Disasters must no longer be reduced to passing headlines. It is time for our government, at all levels, to embrace a proactive approach. Investing in effective drainage infrastructure to protect our people and preserve their means of livelihood,” he stated.
He urged the National Emergency Management Agency and other relevant authorities to act swiftly in delivering relief materials and long-term support to those affected by the flood.
