The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed Tramadol worth N91 million that was smuggled into Kano.

The 491,000 tablets of seized Tramadol 225mg were earlier intercepted by the Nigerian Customs Service and subsequently handed over to NAFDAC.

Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, who supervised the exercise, insisted the agency would not rest until it eradicates dangerous drugs to safeguard the society.

Adeyeye, who was represented by Dr. Martins Iluyomade, Director of Investigation and Enforcement at NAFDAC, said the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kano/Jigawa Command, intercepted the consignment when some unscrupulous elements attempted to smuggle it into Nigeria.

She stated that NCS, headed by Comptroller Dalhatu Abubakar, successfully intercepted the consignment during its routine patrol.

According to her, the tablets, packed in 491 rolls, each containing a tablet, were abandoned by the smugglers after they were overwhelmed by customs operatives.

“This operation demonstrates excellent inter-agency collaboration aimed at curbing the menace of the illicit drug trade in Nigeria,” she said.

She added that the agency remains committed to protecting the health of Nigerians and urged members of the public to report any suspicious drug activities to NAFDAC for immediate action.

The NCS Area Controller, Kano/Jigawa Command, Dalhatu Abubakar, who was represented by Yusuf Idris, Deputy Controller, Enforcement, said the Tramadol was intercepted at the MaiGatari border axis while coming from Niger Republic.
