Trump pledges to help Afghans facing deportation from UAE

    Published on

United States’ President Donald Trump has vowed to intervene on behalf of Afghan refugees who have been detained in the United Arab Emirates for years after fleeing the Taliban’s return to power in 2021.

“I will try to save them, starting right now,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, referencing a report about Afghan refugees being held in a camp in Abu Dhabi.

According to Just the News, UAE officials recently visited the camp unannounced and informed 32 Afghan men, women, and children of their pending deportation. Their passports were reportedly confiscated.

The UAE had agreed in 2021 to temporarily shelter thousands of Afghans evacuated from Kabul following the collapse of the U.S.-backed Afghan government. At Washington’s request, Canada later resettled around 1,000 of them. However, the number of Afghans still in the UAE remains unclear.

Richard Bennett, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, expressed “deep alarm” at the planned deportations. He urged the UAE to halt them, warning that Afghanistan remains unsafe and returnees are at risk of persecution and violence.

Trump’s pledge stands in contrast to his own administration’s strict immigration policies, which included suspending refugee admissions and ending deportation protections for many Afghans in the U.S. in 2021.

Since the U.S. withdrawal, nearly 200,000 Afghans have arrived in the United States under President Joe Biden’s administration, including many who worked with U.S. forces during the 20-year war.

The detained group has reportedly lived in the Abu Dhabi refugee camp for four years, unable to leave or be resettled elsewhere. The UAE, a key U.S. security partner, has not commented publicly on the deportation reports.
