FCTA teachers suspend strike following Wike’s N16bn intervention

Primary school teachers across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have suspended their over three-month-long strike, following a N16 billion intervention facilitated by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

The decision, announced by the FCT wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), comes with a directive for all members to return to the classroom effective Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

The resolution to call off the strike was detailed in a communiqué dated July 4, 2025, and made available to our correspondent on Tuesday.

The strike, which began on March 24, 2025, was triggered by the non-payment of salary arrears and the failure of local authorities to implement the new national minimum wage for primary school teachers in the territory.

However, at a stakeholders’ meeting convened by Minister Wike on Thursday, July 3, a breakthrough was reached. The Minister offered a financial solution—diverting 10 per cent of the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from Area Councils toward offsetting the backlog of teachers’ salaries.

The communiqué, signed by NUT FCT Chairman Abdullahi Shafas, State Secretary Margaret Jethro, and Publicity Secretary Ibukun Adekeye, described the Minister’s move as a constructive and workable step toward resolving the dispute.

According to the union, the decision to suspend the strike followed careful deliberation by the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC), which commended the “positive disposition of the Honourable Minister for taking over the payment of primary school teachers’ emoluments through the FCT Administration (FCTA).”

The strike will officially stand suspended once the N16 billion is fully released and disbursed as agreed.
