The Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Justice Matilda Abrakasa Ayemieye, has formally acknowledged the efforts of government officials, security agencies, and legal stakeholders following the release of Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro.

Justice Omukoro, who was abducted on June 21 and held for 12 days, regained freedom on July 3.

The Bayelsa CJ confirmed that coordinated action involving state authorities and security operatives led to the judge’s safe return.

A statement by Mr. Julius Nyananyo, Head of Media and Information at the Bayelsa State Judiciary, confirmed that multiple institutions contributed to the outcome.

“The successful outcome is attributed to the tireless efforts of the Government of Bayelsa State, security agencies, the Nigerian Bar Association, organisations, community leaders, and the Judiciary family,” the statement read.

Justice Ayemieye expressed specific appreciation to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, members of the National Judicial Council, and Governor Douye Diri. She also thanked Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo and Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ingobere Abraham, for their roles during the crisis.

The Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force were among the security bodies credited with contributing to the resolution of the case. No details were provided regarding arrests or negotiations.

The Chief Judge noted that the operation underscores the power of collaboration, patience, and professionalism in resolving such delicate situations.

Also acknowledged were the Nigerian Bar Association, led by Mazi Afam Osigwe, the Yenagoa and Sagbama branches of the NBA, and the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN).

In addition to official institutions, the Chief Judge thanked civil society organisations and community leaders for their support and expressed appreciation to Justice Omukoro’s family “for their strength, patience, and cooperation.”

Justice Omukoro is currently receiving medical and psychological attention, according to the statement. The judiciary has requested privacy for the judge during the recovery period.

Justice Ayemieye concluded by noting that the judiciary remains committed to improving the safety of its members and addressing factors contributing to such incidents.
