Nigerian fuel imports have decreased by 30 million liters- NMDPRA

    Published on

Demand for gasoline products has decreased by 30 million liters (about 67 percent) since the Federal Government eliminated the fuel subsidy on May 29, 2023. This is from 44.6 million liters per day in August 2024 to 14.7 million liters per day by April 13, 2025.

In an interactive session with State House Correspondents in Abuja on Tuesday, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, or NMDPRA, verified the most recent figures.

According to Farouk Ahmed, the CEO of NMDPRA, local supply increased 670 percent over that time.

Additionally, he explained that local plants produced 26.2 million liters per day in early April, a significant increase from the 3.4 million liters reported in September, the first month with quantifiable output, after producing almost nothing in August.

Ahmed further said that since the start of 2025, the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited, or NNPCL, has not imported a single liter of fuel.

The Port Harcourt Refining Company’s gradual revival in late November and the country’s modular refineries’ increased output were credited by the NMDPRA chief for the spike.

He added that just twice throughout the eight-month period—in November (56 ML) and February (52.3 ML)—did the total supply surpass the government’s 50 ML/day consumption standard, despite the advancements.

At 51.5 ML in March, it fell barely short of the objective, and at 40.9 ML in the first half of April, it was still short.

He maintained that the Authority should only issue import licenses in proportion to the nation’s supply needs.

Ahmed also dispelled concerns that the 2025 national budget will suffer as a result of the instability in the world oil market.
