India threatens crackdown on illegal migration amid US deportation flights

    Published on

A day after a US military plane returned 104 migrants as part of President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement, India threatened to crack down on migrants on Thursday.

Since Trump’s inauguration on January 20, several unregistered migrants have been apprehended nationwide.

It is predicted that 11 million undocumented migrants will be impacted by Trump’s executive initiatives to reform immigration to the United States.

“All nations have a duty to repatriate their citizens who are discovered to be living illegally overseas,” stated India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

The repatriation of illegal aliens to India was the furthest deportation flight ever made by military transport, according to US Border Patrol Chief Michael W. Banks.

Banks posted a video of a shambling line of shackled migrants boarding military planes on social media on Wednesday.

According to Jaishankar, New Delhi was working with the US administration to make sure the returning deportees weren’t abused in any way while in flight.

However, he pointed out that the deportation procedure is not new and that since 2009, the US has removed over 15,000 Indians, with over half of those expulsions occurring between 2019 and 2024.

“While taking steps to ease visas for the legitimate traveler, our focus should be on crackdown — strong crackdown — on the illegal migration industry,” Jaishankar stated.

Despite having the fifth-largest economy in the world and GDP growth that leads the world, hundreds of thousands of Indians still depart the nation every year.
