General Christopher Musa, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), has arrived in Niamey, Niger Republic, for discussions with his Nigerien counterpart, General Mousa Barmo. This meeting comes amid efforts to reintegrate Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso into the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) following their suspension from the bloc due to recent disruptions in democratic governance.

The Acting Director of Defence Information, Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, confirmed the visit in a statement to the press on Wednesday in Abuja, releasing photographs showing General Musa being received by the Nigerien Chief of Defence Staff.

Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso were expelled from ECOWAS after their governments were accused of undermining democratic processes. During a recent meeting in Abuja, General Musa, who also chairs the ECOWAS Committee of Defence Chiefs, emphasized the importance of reinstating the three nations into the regional organization to effectively address security challenges, including insurgency in West Africa.

General Musa underscored that regional security cooperation is crucial for combating the threats facing West Africa. He noted that efforts are being made to ensure these countries return to ECOWAS and called for collective action to enhance security across the region.

While details of today’s meeting in Niamey remain limited, the visit is believed to be a step towards realizing the call for the return of these nations to ECOWAS, which is seen as essential for regional stability.

More information will be provided as it becomes available.
