The Nigerian Army (NA) has responded to allegations made by the Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network (CRRAN) regarding the ownership of a property located at Plot 30, Abakaliki Road, Enugu. The NA categorically denies the claims made by CRRAN and asserts that the property rightfully belongs to the army.

In a statement released by Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, the NA clarified the situation surrounding the property. According to the statement, the property was previously occupied by Colonel Emeka Ugwuoke, a retired officer. However, after his retirement, Colonel Ugwuoke allegedly attempted to convert the property into his private possession. In response, the NA decided to reclaim the property in April 2023.

Contrary to the allegations made by CRRAN, the NA emphasized its commitment to upholding the rule of law and respecting human rights. The army urged the public to disregard any narrative suggesting that it is acting unlawfully or without due process. The NA firmly believes that the property remains under its ownership until proven otherwise through appropriate legal channels.

In light of the controversy, the NA has called for a thorough investigation and a fair resolution to the matter. The army is prepared to present its evidence of ownership to the relevant authorities and is committed to resolving the dispute in accordance with Nigerian legal standards and provisions.

The statement by the NA comes after a viral petition was circulated by CRRAN, accusing the 82 Division of the NA of unlawfully attempting to take over the property. The army views the petition as an attempt to undermine its ongoing efforts to restore peace and tranquility in the South East Region.

As the controversy continues, it remains to be seen how the legal process will unfold and whether the ownership of the property will be confirmed.
