Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Sokoto, has issued a swift directive for the immediate relocation of a dumping site from the Central Market area, following a devastating fire incident that razed numerous shops, motorcycles, and properties worth billions of naira.
The governor personally visited the market on Monday for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation, where he gave the directive in response to the unfortunate incident.
In a statement shared on his social media platform, Governor Sokoto urged for the prompt evacuation of debris from the environment within three weeks from yesterday.
Expressing dismay over the discovery, Governor Sokoto revealed, “I was at the Sokoto State Central Market earlier, where a fire broke out on Monday morning, destroying over 180 stalls. To my surprise, there was some reluctance in guiding me to the garbage area. However, upon hearing people mention it, I took the initiative to investigate the situation myself. It is disheartening that a section of the market has been transformed into a dumping site.”
Highlighting the collective responsibility involved, Governor Sokoto stressed that the presence of garbage in the market area was not a spontaneous occurrence, implicating the business community as well.
The governor’s directive underscores the urgent need for proactive measures to prevent such incidents in the future and ensure the safety and cleanliness of market environments across Sokoto State.
