Employees of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) in Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara have initiated a strike, leaving the company’s offices closed in the affected states. The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) announced the industrial action, with the strike visibly affecting the Birnin Kebbi business office.

In response to the strike, KEDCO’s management strongly condemned the action initiated by NUEE in Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states. Mr. Sunday, the chief regional manager of the company overseeing the affected states, expressed bewilderment at the union’s decision to take such action during the holy month of Ramadan. He emphasized that the union had not engaged in constructive dialogue with the management and questioned the timing of the strike, particularly during a period when Nigerians seek favors and mercy.

Sunday clarified that one of the reasons for the industrial action was the accumulation of pension arrears, spanning two administrations. He criticized the union for not addressing this issue through negotiation and choosing to disrupt services during Ramadan, causing unnecessary hardship to customers. The management categorically condemned the strike, deeming it unjustifiable and improper in all respects.
