The Night of Tributes for the late Group Managing Director/CEO of Access Bank Plc, Herbert Wigwe, continued in Lagos yesterday, with the leader of the Tijjaniyya movement and 14th Emir of Kano, Mohammed Sanusi, captains of industry, and political bigwigs paying heartfelt tributes to the deceased.

Emir Sanusi, visibly emotional, broke down thrice while paying tribute to Herbert Wigwe. Each time he was comforted by Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Aig-Imoukhuede, and an aide, who shielded his teary face from the audience. The profound loss of Herbert Wigwe, his wife Doreen, son Chizzy, and former Managing Director of Nigerian Exchange Group, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, in the US helicopter crash deeply impacted Emir Sanusi and many others.

Alongside Emir Sanusi, other prominent figures including Vice President Kashim Shettima also honored the memory of the deceased. Notable dignitaries such as Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, and Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, Chairman of Coronation Group, were also in attendance.

Emir Sanusi reminisced about Herbert’s kindness towards him and his family, revealing that some believed he owned Access Bank, with Herbert and Aig-Imoukhuede merely fronting for him due to Herbert’s altruistic gestures.

In an emotional moment, Emir Sanusi recounted Herbert’s unwavering support during challenging times in Kano, highlighting Herbert’s dedication to assisting him and his family. He expressed his gratitude for Herbert’s assistance during his transition from Kano, emphasizing Herbert’s selflessness and generosity.

Herbert’s sudden demise left a profound impact on Emir Sanusi, as he reflected on their last interactions and the profound loss to him personally and to the community. He praised Herbert’s character, describing him as a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, delivering a poignant speech titled “Herbert Wigwe: The Flower That Bloomed Before Spring,” emphasized Herbert’s early successes, his vision of building the “Harvard of Africa,” and his commitment to leaving a lasting legacy. Shettima mourned the tragic loss of Herbert’s family members and others in the crash, urging Nigerians to celebrate their remarkable lives and legacies.

As tributes poured in from various dignitaries, including Franck Riester, representing the French government, and Kayode Ayeni, Chairman of Zillenium Limited, the collective grief over Herbert Wigwe’s passing underscored the profound impact he had on the lives of many. His legacy, marked by compassion, generosity, and unwavering dedication, continues to inspire those who strive for greatness.
