Presidency and Police Issue Stern Warnings Ahead of NLC Protest as 65 Groups Withdraw Support

Ahead of the scheduled two-day nationwide protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) against the escalating cost of living, the Presidency reiterated its warning against the demonstration, emphasizing its illegality. Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, underscored the breach of a court order in proceeding with the protest. The police echoed similar sentiments, cautioning against disrupting commercial activities during the protest.

In a bid to forestall any potential chaos, 65 civil society groups opted out of the planned demonstration, citing concerns about its hijack by violent elements. This decision follows appeals from various quarters, including the Department of State Services (DSS), expressing apprehensions about the protest’s potential to degenerate into lawlessness.

Despite these withdrawals and warnings, the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, reaffirmed the union’s commitment to proceed with the protest as scheduled. Ajaero highlighted the grievances driving the action, emphasizing the urgent need for solutions to the prevailing economic challenges.

As tensions escalate, security agencies across states have reassured the public of their preparedness to maintain law and order during the protest. Commissioners of Police in Lagos, Ekiti, Delta, and Kaduna states have all issued statements affirming their commitment to ensuring peaceful demonstrations while cautioning against any acts of violence or disruption.

In response to these developments, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, emphasized the government’s stance, echoing concerns about the potential breach of a court injunction restraining the NLC from organizing protests.

Amidst these warnings and counter-warnings, the stage is set for a potential showdown between the NLC and security agencies, with both sides standing firm on their positions. As the nation braces for possible unrest, the imperative for dialogue and peaceful resolution of grievances becomes increasingly vital to prevent further escalation of tensions and safeguard public safety.
