The Bayelsa Police Command has announced the adoption of technology as a crucial tool in its efforts to tackle crime and address issues of extortion within its ranks. The initiative aims to maintain peace and security in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa, and its surrounding areas.
During an interactive session with the media at the Earnest Ikoli Press Centre in Yenagoa, the Police command spokesperson, ASP Musa Mohammed, revealed that drone technology has been deployed to monitor criminal activities and curb any excesses exhibited by police personnel during operations.
Since the introduction of drone technology, notable achievements have been recorded, including the arrest of two police officers allegedly involved in extortion. The apprehended officers are currently undergoing internal disciplinary procedures, emphasizing the commitment to hold personnel accountable.
Mohammed cautioned the public against engaging in bribery with the police, emphasizing the Police Commissioner’s unwavering stance against extortion and other irregularities within the force. He highlighted the Commissioner’s proactive strategies in crime prevention, leveraging his knowledge of the local terrain.
The spokesperson assured the public that the Police force, equipped with drone surveillance, is committed to maintaining stability and eradicating criminal activities. He encouraged collaboration with the community, emphasizing the importance of innovative ideas and partnerships to build a safer Bayelsa State.
Expressing gratitude to the media for their crucial role in balanced reporting, Mohammed acknowledged the cooperation of the people, inter-agency support, and assistance from the state government as contributing factors to the successes achieved under the leadership of Commissioner Francis Idu.
The State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr. Samuel Numonengi, commended the Police’s commitment to transparency and partnership with the media in curbing crime. He emphasized the importance of a positive relationship between the Police and the media, expressing hope for continued collaboration to sustain the state’s low crime rate. Numonengi highlighted the significant role played by the media in ensuring peace and solicited continued support for the newly deployed Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Musa Mohammed.
