Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, strongly criticized the actions of certain traders and heavy-duty vehicle owners whose trucks, laden with loads exceeding 100 tons, ply the Maiduguri-Gamboru Ngala Road. Terming it as economic sabotage, Governor Zulum voiced his concerns on Sunday in Gamboru town, Ngala Local Government Area.
The Governor emphasized the adverse impact of overloaded trucks on the road, leading to its rapid deterioration. He expressed worry about the long-term consequences, citing the undermining of the Federal Government’s infrastructure improvement efforts and the hindrance to economic progress and development in the state.
Governor Zulum decried the specific trend observed on the Maiduguri-Gamboru Ngala Road, where heavy trucks carry excessive loads, such as over 2,000 bags of cement or sugar, exceeding 100 tons. He highlighted the resulting damage to the road and the potential threat to public safety, emphasizing the increased risk of accidents.
To address this issue, Governor Zulum announced plans for collaboration with relevant federal agencies. The proposed measures include stricter enforcement of weight restrictions, implementation of penalties for violators, and the establishment of weigh stations at strategic points along major transportation routes.
Governor Zulum acknowledged the commitment of the Federal Government to revitalizing federal roads in Borno State and commended their efforts. Despite supporting trans-border trade, the Governor stressed the need for measures to preserve road infrastructure, recognizing the impact of overloading on critical structures like the border bridge.
