In a bid to address concerns surrounding the acquisition of fraudulent degree certificates, the Federal Ministry of Education in Nigeria has announced the suspension of the evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates from the Benin and Togo Republics. This decision comes in the wake of a groundbreaking investigative report by the Daily Nigerian Newspaper, published on December 30, 2023, which exposed the ease with which individuals can obtain degrees from these countries within a remarkably short period.

The report, titled “UNDERCOVER: How DAILY NIGERIAN reporter bagged Cotonou varsity degree in 6 weeks, participated in NYSC scheme,” shed light on the nefarious means employed by some Nigerians to obtain degrees in order to secure job opportunities for which they are not qualified. The Federal Ministry of Education strongly condemns such acts and is taking immediate action to investigate the matter thoroughly.

The suspension of the evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates from Benin and Togo Republics will remain in effect until the Ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the responsible education ministries in the two countries, the Department of State Security Services (DSSS), and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), concludes its investigation. The Ministry urges the general public to support its efforts and provide any useful information that may assist in finding a lasting solution to prevent further occurrences.

Internally, the Ministry has also initiated administrative processes to determine the culpability of its own staff, ensuring that applicable Public Service Rules are duly applied. This demonstrates the Ministry’s commitment to maintaining integrity within its ranks and upholding the highest standards of education.

The issue of degree mills, which refers to institutions that operate outside the control of regulators, is a global problem faced by many countries. The Federal Ministry of Education has been actively addressing this issue, issuing warnings against patronizing such institutions and working closely with security agencies to crack down on perpetrators. The Ministry will continue to review its strategies and take decisive actions against any officials found to be involved in facilitating fraudulent activities.

The Ministry emphasizes that it has always adhered to the global standard for evaluating and accrediting certificates. However, it recognizes the need for further measures to sanitize the education sector. In line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR’s directive, the Ministry will refocus on inclusivity and the recognition of all skill sets, discouraging the sole reliance on degree certificates, whether obtained locally or from foreign countries.

The Federal Ministry of Education remains committed to collaborating with stakeholders, including civil society organizations, to enhance the Nigerian education system. It appreciates the understanding and patience of the public as it works diligently to address these critical issues.

As the new year begins, the Federal Ministry of Education extends its warm wishes to all Nigerians and emphasizes the collective effort required to strengthen the education sector for the betterment of the nation.
