The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Dr. Solomon Arase CFR, a retired Inspector General of Police, has emphasized the importance of accessibility, dedication, and commitment for Police Public Relations Officers (PROs) across the state Commands and Departments of the Nigeria Police Force. Dr. Arase urged the officers to be readily available to the public, including the media, and to promptly respond to inquiries.
During the opening ceremony of the Annual Conference of the Police Public Relations Officers in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations at the Commission, conveyed Dr. Arase’s message to the media. Mr. Ani highlighted that the role of Police PROs is challenging and requires unwavering dedication and commitment. He stressed that these officers must consider themselves servants of the people, as their actions directly impact the image of the Nigeria Police Force.
Dr. Arase emphasized that effective communication is crucial for the success of the police in their duty to protect and serve the public. He stated that information sharing has become even more imperative in recent times, as crime has evolved into a mobile enterprise. Building trust with citizens is the foundation of effective communication, and such trust can only be established through the strict confidentiality and proper handling of information received.
The Chairman expressed his satisfaction that the Nigeria Police Force has remained committed to organizing the Annual Conference of Police Public Relations Officers. The conference serves as a platform for brainstorming and strategizing on information management within the Force. Dr. Arase believes this event is critical for advancing effective policing in Nigeria, particularly in a diverse environment.
Acknowledging the ever-changing operating environment, Dr. Arase urged the police to adapt rapidly and stay ahead of public opinion. Rather than merely reacting to public sentiment, he stressed the need to anticipate and shape public opinion. Proactivity, he emphasized, is key to maintaining public support and ensuring successful policing.
Dr. Arase also highlighted the impact of globalization, the democratization of information, and various other developments on the Nigeria Police Force’s engagement with the public. He emphasized the importance of two-way communication and the need to prioritize feedback channels for a more comprehensive and fruitful engagement.
The Police Service Commission reiterated its commitment to supporting the Nigeria Police Force in its role as the lead agency in internal security. They pledged to continue highlighting the success stories of the police in their communication with the public, recognizing that through partnership, greater success can be achieved.
