Persisting issues of underdevelopment in African nations are increasingly attributed to leadership failures and ineffective governance systems. Beyond military-led regimes, democratically governed countries also grapple with flawed electoral processes during transitions of power, contributing to a lack of visionary political leaders and hindered growth across the continent.

Expressing concern over this situation is Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, a former Education Minister and one-time presidential candidate, renowned for her involvement in the Bring Back Our Girls Movement. Observing the deteriorating state of leadership in Africa, she asserts that the key to progress lies in nurturing a new generation of proactive individuals who will assume leadership roles in their respective countries.

Addressing attendees at the School of Politics, Policy, and Governance’s graduation ceremony, Ezekwesili described the institution as unconventional, designed to attract and develop a cadre of political leaders dedicated to serving citizens who are aware of their rights. The school’s mission, she emphasized, is to equip future leaders with values, knowledge, and skills necessary for addressing complex public problems.

The 33-week program offered by the School of Politics, Policy, and Governance aims to produce ethical, competent, and capable leaders committed to serving the public good. Ezekwesili stressed the importance of disruptive thinking in shaping the political landscape and highlighted the need for leaders to leverage technology for economic growth.

In her role as the Convener/Chair of #FixPolitics, Ezekwesili pointed out the increasing leadership deficit in policy analysis, development, and good governance across the continent. She called for Africa to play a central role in global conversations on governance, economic growth, climate change, and technology, emphasizing the necessity for disruptive leaders focused on finding innovative solutions.

Identifying Nigeria’s leadership challenges, Ezekwesili linked them to a distorted political culture that prioritizes personal interests over the common good. She advocated for a mindset shift among leaders, emphasizing the importance of character, competence, and capacity in producing effective leaders in Africa.

Alero Ayida-Otobo, the CEO of SPPG, echoed Ezekwesili’s sentiments, emphasizing the urgent need to groom leaders with a policy development and good governance mindset. She highlighted the role of SPPG in contributing to Nigeria and Africa’s future prosperity by instilling a sense of moral commitment to the common good among politicians and public administrators.

Barr Olu Omotayo, the President of the Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network, emphasized the need for strong institutions in Africa, stating that institutional strength is crucial for sustainable development. He argued that, unlike developed countries, Africa lacks strong institutions, allowing leaders undue influence over critical processes.

As advocates and leaders rally for change, the call for a focus on ethical leadership, strong institutions, and a new generation of disruptive thinkers gains momentum in the quest for improved governance across Africa.
