A 44-year-old man, Nurudeen Disu, residing in Anthony Village, Lagos State, was arraigned by the police on Thursday for allegedly stealing 33 cows. He was charged with stealing before an Ogudu Magistrate’s Court and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Insp Bassey Sunday, told the court that the defendant committed the offence between 2019 and 2023 behind the Newcastle Hotel in Anthony Village. Sunday stated that the defendant conspired with others to commit the theft.

He explained that the defendant had been entrusted with 50 cows worth N20 million by the complainant, Mr. Bushura Adebuosu, to take care of. When Adebuosu returned to collect the cows, he found that 33 out of the 50 cows were missing, and the defendant could not provide a satisfactory account of their whereabouts.

The defendant is a herdsman known for rearing cows for residents of the community. The prosecutor pointed out that the defendant’s actions contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, Mrs. O. A. Daodu, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N2 million with two sureties in like sum. One of the sureties must be a recognized Hausa leader in Lagos State, while the other must be a religious leader. The case was adjourned until November 6 for trial.
