The Alumni Association of the Kwara State Polytechnic has expressed displeasure over the level of encroachment on the institution’s land by neighbouring communities, describing it as illegal.

The President, Protem National Executives of the Alumni, Engr. Abu Salami, expressed the worry during a familiarisation visit to the Management of the Polytechnic on Thursday.

Salami, who described the situation as disheartening, called for urgent intervention of the state government before the situation escalates beyond control.

He said: “Kwara state Government should stop all ongoing illegal constructions within the Polytechnic and revoke the lands that had already been taken over by the villagers.

“The Management should proffer a permanent solution to the situation by fencing the institution’s land.”

The President, who lauded the leadership style of the Rector, promised that the Alumni Association would do its best to assist the Management in achieving the aims and objectives of the institution’s founding fathers, lauding the Management for transforming the institution’s hostels to one of the best due to the facilities provided.

He called on the students, especially new intakes, to take advantage of the facilities by residing in the hostels which, he said, is cheaper than residing outside the Polytechnic.

The Alumni Executives, alongside the Rector and some members of the Management, later visited some projects of the institution, including the Polytechnic Bakery, Bottled Water factory, Medical Diagnostic Centre, Kwarapoly Radio and the Mass Communications Department Studio.

Earlier, the Rector, Engr. Abdul Jimoh Muhammed, had commended the pragmatic leadership style of the Alumni President, urging the Alumni to continue to collaborate with the Management in its efforts to take the institution back to the glorious days of “Kwara College of Technology” in terms of its standard, pledging support of the Management to the Alumni at all times.
