2027: Lagos APC accuses opposition of seeking shield from accountability

    Published on

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused opposition parties of attempting to evade scrutiny by portraying legitimate accountability processes as political persecution ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Monday by the party’s spokesman, Mogaji Seye Oladejo, the Lagos APC said recent comments and actions by opposition figures suggest a deliberate effort to secure what it described as “political immunity” from public examination.

According to Oladejo, opposition leaders have failed to present a coherent alternative vision for Nigeria and have instead resorted to claims of harassment whenever questions arise about their past records in office.

He said the growing tendency to cry persecution reflects fear of accountability rather than genuine concern for democratic principles.

“The desperation of the opposition has reached a point where they now seek political cover instead of public validation,” Oladejo said, adding that attempts to blackmail the government into granting immunity undermine constitutional democracy.

He stressed that democratic participation does not confer protection from investigation or criticism, noting that political ambition must go hand in hand with transparency and responsibility.

Oladejo argued that calls for immunity weaken public confidence in governance and erode the credibility of opposition politics. He added that many of those now complaining had previously supported similar accountability measures when they held power.

Reaffirming the APC’s position, Oladejo said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains focused on economic stabilisation, security reforms and institutional renewal, and will not be distracted by what he described as manufactured political narratives.

He urged political actors across party lines to engage the electorate constructively, warning that the 2027 elections will be decided on performance, ideas and leadership capacity rather than attempts to escape scrutiny.
