Regarding the current conflict with Russia, Pope Leo XIV has spoken with Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine.
Zelensky confirmed the phone discussion with the Pope in a tweet on his official X handle on Monday, describing the exchange as “very warm and truly substantive.”
Zelensky revealed that the Pope discussed the “release of prisoners” and how to “achieve a just and lasting peace” for Ukraine.
We also talked about Russia’s deportation of thousands of Ukrainian children. In his tweet, Zelensky said, “Ukraine depends on the Vatican’s help to get them back to their families.”
In addition, President Zelensky told the Pope “about the agreement between Ukraine and our partners,” stating that a “full and unconditional ceasefire for at least 30 days must begin” on Monday (today).
“We have repeatedly emphasized Ukraine’s readiness for further negotiations in any format, including direct talks,” he continued.
“Ukraine is making every effort to put a stop to this conflict. We are now waiting for Russia to take comparable action.
“Such a visit would bring real hope to all believers and to all our people,” Zelenskyy stated as he sent an invitation to the Pope to visit Ukraine on an apostolic mission.
