The Federal Ministry of Youth Development and the North East Development Commission (NEDC) are set to formalize a partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at addressing drug abuse and related social issues in Nigeria’s northeast region.

Ayodele Olawande, Minister of State for Youth Development, announced the initiative during a recent meeting with NEDC’s management team led by Alhaji Mohammed G Alkali in Abuja. Both leaders voiced their concerns about the widespread drug abuse impacting various societal levels in the region.

Olawande praised the NEDC’s efforts in the northeast, particularly following a tour of areas affected by Boko Haram insurgency. He emphasized the need for continued and enhanced collaboration between the Ministry and NEDC to tackle drug abuse, especially among the youth.

The proposed MoU aims to enhance youth engagement, empowerment, rehabilitation, and training, fostering a positive contribution to the nation’s development. Olawande acknowledged the historical neglect of youth and its contribution to rising drug abuse and other harmful practices.

To counteract these issues, the Ministry is implementing a nationwide “One Youth, One Ward” initiative designed to redirect youthful energy into productive activities, thereby improving Nigeria’s socio-economic landscape.

Alhaji Mohammed Alkali, Managing Director and CEO of NEDC, committed to supporting the Ministry’s programs as they align with NEDC’s strategic Master Plan for regional restoration. Alkali highlighted the NEDC’s focus on eleven key areas, including youth development in agriculture, ICT, commerce, and education.

He detailed the NEDC’s achievements, such as building 18 mega schools and 18 ICT centers across the region, and providing vocational training in areas like handset repair and metering for electricity distribution companies. Despite the challenges posed by 15 years of insurgency, Alkali expressed confidence that effective partnerships and commitment from all stakeholders will lead to significant improvements in the region’s situation.
