    Varsity don urges youths to embrace agriculture despite course of study

    Professor of Fisheries and Aquatic, Environmental Department, University of Uyo and Vice Chairman, Vika Integrated Farms, in Akwa Ibom State, Mandu Essien-Ibok has encouraged everyone, including graduates to embrace agriculture irrespective of their course of study.

    Prof Ibok gave the admonition during a meeting of at Vika Integrated Farms Uyo.

    Speaking after conducting guests round the farm which serves as a training ground for farmers, students and other corporate organizations across Nigeria, the Vice Chairman described agriculture as another cash cow that cannot go out of season, adding that with proper training and following of times and season, one can break even in farming.

    ”We plant virtually everything and they are doing well. So I’ll tell you sincerely, whatever course you read, come into agriculture. You’ll enjoy it, just know the time and follow the seasons.”

    Also speaking, Dr Ade Essien-Ibok, a medical doctor, noted that farming, especially gardening, could be therapeutic and bring about a lot of health benefits.

    Her words,”So, we can start from top which is health. The health benefits of physical activities cannot be over emphasized. Most things killing us are as a result of a sedentary lifestyle. This will provide an avenue for people to engage in physical activity, you know, doing something like gardening takes a lot of energy, burns a lot of calories. By the time you walk to get sand from here, water from there, you plan to burn some calories.
