US renews support for Nigerian students pursuing education opportunities

The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to helping young Nigerians access education opportunities in America, pledging continued support for students eager to study in U.S. institutions.

Public Diplomacy Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, Brian Neubert, gave the assurance on Monday at the 2025 EducationUSA Nigeria Fair, themed ‘Empowering futures, discover American excellence in education and innovation.’

The annual fair connects prospective international students with U.S. higher education institutions, offering access to information on admissions, academic programmes, financial aid, and scholarships. This year’s edition featured representatives from 28 American colleges and universities.

“The United States is proud to partner with Nigeria in empowering students, who are the next generation of leaders, innovators, and change-makers. EducationUSA brought these institutions here because they want to recruit Nigerian students to their campuses,” Neubert said.

He explained that EducationUSA provides free counseling services to guide students through the application process, while urging applicants who succeed in securing student visas to “responsibly maintain” their status by complying with regulations and making the most of their time abroad.

“As you consider your next steps, know that you are joining a long tradition of Nigerian students who have excelled in U.S. institutions and gone on to make significant contributions to their communities and the world,” he added.

The pledge comes at a time when many Nigerian students face hurdles in accessing U.S. education. In August, more than 300 students admitted to American universities complained of visa delays despite completing embassy interviews. The backlog coincides with immigration restrictions under President Donald Trump’s administration, including a suspension of student visa processing and efforts to block Harvard University from admitting non-Americans.
