The Minister of Works and former governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi, has pledged his support for his successor in office, warning that he will confront anyone causing trouble for the current State Governor, Francis Nwifuru. Umahi made these remarks while addressing journalists in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, emphasizing that Governor Nwifuru deserves respect.

Umahi expressed gratitude for the support he received during his transition to the All Progressive Congress (APC), particularly highlighting Governor Nwifuru’s loyalty. He asserted, “I will fight anybody who makes trouble with the governor because he deserves our respect. I have done my bit, have left the stage, and must respect myself.”

While acknowledging the common conflicts between predecessors and successors, Umahi affirmed his commitment to maintaining a harmonious relationship with Governor Nwifuru. He emphasized the importance of supporting leaders, noting that attempts to undermine them ultimately lead to failure.

Umahi also addressed the behavior of certain National Assembly members in the state who have distanced themselves from him since the 2023 general elections. He singled out Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi as the only lawmaker who openly acknowledges their relationship. Despite the avoidance by others, Umahi remains unwavering in his support for Governor Nwifuru, emphasizing his instrumental role in the governor’s emergence.

Reflecting on the situation, Umahi indicated a shift towards cultivating political friendships rather than political paternity, given the circumstances.
