In a significant ruling, the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal has dismissed the petition filed by Peter Obi and the Labour Party (LP) challenging the requirement to obtain 25% of the votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in order to win a presidential election. The court’s decision underscores that the FCT does not possess a unique status, and the mandatory 25% threshold for FCT votes is not obligatory. The tribunal has affirmed that citizens of the FCT do not receive special privileges compared to other states in this regard.
