Tinubu scheming to undermine opposition coalition, says ADC

    Published on

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the Bola Tinubu administration of orchestrating what it described as a calculated plot to destabilise the emerging opposition coalition in the country.

The party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary and National Spokesperson, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, on Monday, alleged that key government officials were actively working to intimidate and co‑opt ADC members in a bid to weaken the growing alliance of opposition forces.

According to the statement, former state chairmen and senior executives of the ADC in the North East and North West had been summoned to a secret meeting with federal government officials. Abdullahi claimed the meeting had nothing to do with national security or reconciliation, but was aimed at pressuring those members into participating in a “fabricated scheme against the opposition coalition.”

“This is not politics. This is sabotage,” he stated.

Abdullahi warned that the actions of federal appointees meddling in party affairs amounted to an assault on Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.

“This surreptitious dalliance with the ADC state chairpersons by appointees of the federal government, who should be focused on urgent national security priorities, is a coordinated assault on multiparty democracy. This is how one‑party states are born — through intimidation,” he said.

He pointed to recent developments, the July 1 Coalition Declaration and the July 2 unveiling of the ADC’s role within it, as having unsettled the ruling party.

“It is now obvious that the Tinubu administration — having lost the trust of the Nigerian people — cannot withstand the pressure of a united and credible opposition. But rather than correct its ways, it has resorted to its old playbook of destabilising opposition parties,” Abdullahi stated.

He vowed that the ADC, which he described as a party for all Nigerians, would resist any attempt to subvert its ranks or corrupt its purpose.

“We call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take note of these sinister moves by some of his appointees and call them to order. The president needs to prove to Nigerians that he is indeed a Democrat. He needs to remind his men that if the Goodluck Jonathan administration were intolerant and subversive of the opposition, the APC would not have come to power in 2015 and he would not have been a President today,” he said.
