President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given the green light to a wage increase of ₦35,000 for all Federal civil servants.
The updated pay scale will come into effect on September 1, 2023, as detailed in a memorandum from the Presidency, signed by Ekpo U. O. Nta, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission.
This circular was disseminated to a range of key recipients, including the Chief of Staff to the President, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Ministers, and Ministers of State, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Chairpersons of Federal Commissions, Federal Permanent Secretaries, the Clerk of the National Assembly, the Secretary of the National Judicial Council, the Secretary of the Federal Judicial Service Commission, Directors-General, and Chief Executives of Parastatals, Agencies, and Government-Owned Companies, the Auditor-General for the Federation, the Accountant-General of the Federation, the Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation. The memorandum is dated October 19, 2023.
“I make reference to the Memorandum of Understanding reached between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) on Monday, October 2, 2023, arising from the dispute over the removal of subsidy on the price of premium motor spirit (PMS). I hereby convey the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s approval for a wage increase of ₦35,000:00 (thirty-five thousand Naira) per month for all Federal Government employees, effective from September 1, 2023, until a new national minimum wage is legislated.
Consequently, the implementation of the ₦35,000.00 monthly wage increase for all Federal Government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies funded from the treasury will be funded from the treasury. Non-treasury funded Federal Government agencies are expected to finance this increase from their internally generated funds,” the memorandum stated.
