President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her reappointment as Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for a second term. Okonjo-Iweala was unanimously elected to the position on Friday, a testament to the global trust and confidence in her leadership.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu expressed his delight over Okonjo-Iweala’s reappointment, noting that it reflects her exceptional leadership in advancing multilateral trade for sustainable global development. He emphasized that her continued leadership would further strengthen the WTO’s role in fostering inclusive economic growth and good governance worldwide.
The statement also highlighted that Okonjo-Iweala made history in 2021 as the first African and the first woman to lead the 164-nation WTO. Her first term as Director-General will end on August 31, 2025, with her second term commencing on September 1, 2025.
Nigeria, as a committed member of the WTO, ECOWAS, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), has pledged its continued support for the WTO’s mission to promote a fair and inclusive multilateral trading system. President Tinubu assured Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria’s unwavering support as she works to consolidate her reforms and advocate for equitable global trade practices.
