On August 9, 2024, President Bola Tinubu directed security agencies to intensify their crackdown on illegal mining operations across Nigeria. This directive came during a meeting with the 32nd course participants of the National Defence College (NDC) at the State House in Abuja.

During the meeting, President Tinubu underscored the critical need for increased efforts to address illegal mining, which he identified as a significant issue. He also urged mining companies to prioritize the health and safety of local communities and Nigerian citizens. The President’s comments followed a presentation by the NDC participants titled “Harnessing the Mining Industry for Enhanced National Security and Development: Strategic Options for Nigeria by 2035.”

Praising the presentation, President Tinubu emphasized the role of the mining sector in economic diversification and national development. He commended the participants for their in-depth work and encouraged them to continue focusing on research and practical solutions throughout their 11-month study.

Rear Admiral Olumuyiwa Olotu, Commandant of the NDC, highlighted the institution’s history and achievements, noting that it has graduated 2,871 participants since its inception in 1992. The current cohort, Course 32, comprises 111 participants from various military branches, police, government agencies, and 19 international attendees from different continents. The presentation was delivered by Colonel Olajide Bello on behalf of the delegation.
