Threat to Peter Obi, assault on Nigeria’s unity, constitution – Abaribe

    Published on

Former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has condemned the reported restriction of Peter Obi’s movement in Edo State, describing it as a direct threat to Nigeria’s unity and democratic foundations.

Reacting to the alleged directive by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebolo, barring Obi without prior approval, Abaribe warned that such actions undermine constitutional rights and risk fueling national division.

In a statement released on Wednesday by his media adviser, Uchenna Awom, Abaribe cautioned that no governor has the authority to curtail a citizen’s right to free movement, adding that such overreach is not just illegal but dangerous.

He reminded the governor — a former senator — that Nigeria remains a constitutional democracy, governed by law and not personal whims.

“Freedom of movement and expression are pillars of our democracy. No Nigerian needs permission to visit any state. This dangerous precedent must be rejected,” he said.

He concluded by urging authorities to take the matter seriously and ensure Obi’s safety, while calling on leaders to respect the rule of law and uphold national unity.
