The Super Falcons of Nigeria have continued their remarkable dominance in African women’s football, topping almost every major category in achievements and individual awards.

Nigeria has produced 13 African Women’s Footballer of the Year winners—more than any other country. Asisat Oshoala holds the record with six titles (2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022, 2023). Perpetua Nkwocha follows with four (2004, 2005, 2010, 2011), while; Cynthia Uwak won twice (2006, 2007) and Mercy Akide was the first recipient in 2001.

Other African winners include Alberta Sackey (Ghana, 2002), Adjoa Bayor (Ghana, 2003), Noko Matlou (South Africa, 2008), Genoveva Anonma (Equatorial Guinea, 2012), Gaëlle Enganamouit (Cameroon, 2015), Thembi Kgatlana (South Africa, 2018), and Barbra Banda (Zambia, 2024).

At the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Nigeria’s dominance is unmatched: 10-time champions: 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2024 and Equatorial Guinea has two titles (2008, 2012), while South Africa claimed their first in 2022.

Morocco will host the 16th WAFCON in March 2026—its third consecutive hosting.
