The Super Eagles have expressed deep sorrow over the tragic passing of Portugal and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who reportedly died in a car accident in Zamora, Spain, on Thursday morning.

Jota and his brother are believed to have lost their lives when their Lamborghini veered off the road and burst into flames after a tyre blowout during an overtaking manoeuvre.

The crash occurred around 12:30 a.m. local time in the municipality of Cernadilla, according to Spanish police reports.

In a heartfelt message shared via their official X account, the Super Eagles joined the global football community in mourning the loss of the talented forward.

“We are sad to hear of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and teammates at this time. May his soul rest in peace.”

The news has sent shockwaves through the football world, with tributes pouring in from clubs, national teams, and players across the globe.

Jota had a memorable career with Liverpool, earning admiration for his pace, versatility, and eye for goal.

He was also a key player for the Portuguese national team, helping them win the UEFA Nations League and playing a crucial role in their quest to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Interestingly, Jota missed the last match between Portugal and Nigeria in an international friendly held on November 17, 2022, at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon.

The Liverpool star was unavailable due to a calf injury as Portugal cruised to a 4–0 win over the Super Eagles in the 2022 pre-World Cup friendly.
His untimely death comes as a major blow not only to Liverpool and Portugal but also to football fans worldwide who admired his tenacity, professionalism, and passion for the game.
