Concerns are mounting among Nigerians over the deteriorating security situation in Benue State, which has been plagued by escalating conflicts between herders and farmers, banditry, kidnappings, gang violence, and cult-related activities.

Reports indicate that the state’s security challenges have persisted since the tenure of former Governor Samuel Ortom and continue under the current leadership of Governor Hyacinth Alia. Farming in the region has significantly declined due to frequent attacks by armed groups, leading to numerous deaths, abductions, and mass displacements.

In one recent incident, at least 56 people were confirmed dead in attacks on the Gbagir and Logo areas in the Sankera region. Governor Alia confirmed 17 deaths earlier, and the state police later reported that simultaneous attacks by militias occurred in both locations.

Following the violence, Governor Alia urged residents not to take the law into their own hands and emphasized that early intelligence had helped contain further destruction. He also mentioned a collaborative effort with the Office of the National Security Adviser to craft a long-term strategy to address the crisis, calling for vigilance and timely reporting to security agencies.

Meanwhile, the Otobi Akpa community was also attacked by suspected Fulani herdsmen, resulting in at least 13 fatalities, multiple injuries, and over 50 homes destroyed. The attack began near Otobi Junction in the evening and marked a sharp contrast to the area’s traditionally peaceful coexistence with herders, which has recently become strained over grazing-related issues.

Benue’s Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Professor Moses Ogbaji, highlighted the devastating impact of ongoing violence on agriculture and food production. He noted that many farmers had abandoned their fields out of fear. In response, the government launched the Benue State Civil Protection Guards to assist existing security forces and protect local communities.

The Tiv paramount ruler, Prof. James Ayatse, supported non-violent measures, such as repatriating displaced residents, aligning with Governor Alia’s vision for peace and security across the state.

Senator Abba Moro, representing Benue South, strongly condemned the Otobi-Akpa attacks, labeling them unjustified and unacceptable. He reiterated the people’s right to live without fear or threats.

Hon. Angbo Kennedy, who represents Otukpo/Akpa in the State Assembly, decried the ongoing bloodshed and urged security agencies to take swift action. He also suggested that locals consider self-defense in the absence of adequate protection.

Former Senate President David Mark also voiced his outrage over the killings and widespread destruction, while cautioning against ethnic profiling and revenge attacks. He noted some success by security forces and called for thorough investigations and justice for all responsible parties.

Comrade Dan Onjeh, a former senatorial candidate and ex-chair of PRODA, criticized the insecurity plaguing the state, especially in agriculturally dependent Benue South. He urged both state and federal authorities to act decisively. Onjeh also pointed to troubling signs of collaboration between herdsmen and certain locals, citing a kidnap victim’s account involving both Fulani and Idoma youths. He expressed deep disappointment over the betrayal of hospitality by herders who were once peacefully hosted in the community.
