At the 2024 National Children’s Leadership Conference (NCLC) in Abuja, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and other dignitaries will interact with young leaders.

This was revealed at a news conference in Abuja on Monday by Hon. Bamidele Salam (PDP, Osun), the founder and president of the Children of Africa Leadership and Values Development Initiative (CALDEV).

The conference is set for November 17 and 21, 2024, according to the chairman of the House’s Public Accounts Committee.

According to Salam, this year’s NCLC will be an essential forum for empowering Nigerian youth between the ages of 12 and 17, assisting them in gaining leadership experience and having fruitful conversations about civic duty.

In order to promote national unity, cohesion, and sustainable development, the event will bring together young leaders from all around Nigeria in a diverse and welcoming setting.

“This initiative aims to shape the leaders of tomorrow, equipping our youth to actively contribute to national development and sustainability,” he said, adding that the program’s underlying philosophy is to bring together Nigeria’s largest and most diverse group of young leaders in order to foster national unity, loyalty, integration, and patriotism.

Every year on November 20, Universal Children’s Day is observed globally, coinciding with the 2024 conference. The event, which has as its theme “Empowering Young Voices, Building a Legacy for Sustainable Development,” will include panel discussions, skills-building exercises, leadership training, and lobbying for children’s rights.

“This year’s conference has been carefully planned to leave a lasting impression on those who attend. We are sure the 2024 NCLC will provide young Nigerians with the skills they need to thrive and contribute significantly to society.

“Notable Nigerian leaders will also take part in the occasion. Vice President Kashim Shettima, who backed the conference the year before, is anticipated to be the Distinguished Special Guest of Honor.

“We appreciate his unwavering dedication to youth development,” Salam remarked, adding that many young people were inspired by Shettima’s attendance at the 2023 conference.

Speaker Abbass will provide insights into government and is well-known for his support of children’s issues and their engagement in policy-making.

Additionally, Rt. Hon. Speaker Dr. Abba Tajudeen will conduct a mentorship session for attendees during the conference. Speaker Abbass, who is well-known for supporting children’s issues and involving them in the formulation of public policy, will share his perspectives on leadership and governance. His talk will offer priceless insights into how youth might influence public policy,” Salam said.

Hon. Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, will speak about legislative reforms and youth leadership, highlighting the influence of youth on Nigeria’s legislative future. “His presence highlights the significance of policy-making and civic engagement for youth leadership,” Salam stated.

He went on to say that the event’s chief host, His Excellency Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, would speak to attendees about the real-world applications of leadership. Salam was excited about Wike’s involvement, pointing out that the young leaders present would learn a lot from his vast experience in governing.

“Plan International’s Country Director, Mr. Charles Usie, will also be a keynote speaker, sharing his knowledge of youth development and empowerment.”

Salam also emphasized how young Nigerians are recognized who have demonstrated exceptional achievements in their fields.

He noted that Ashezi Akwashiki, a 10-year-old poet, published author, and education champion who has won international acclaim for advocating for education and the rights of girls and women, is one of the “Early Achievers” of NCLC 2024.

Master Sheun Ayomide Samuel, a 16-year-old student and inventor who has created cutting-edge, energy-efficient devices like rechargeable fans and lighting, is also honored.

Maxwell Anyanwu Munachinso, a 15-year-old AI specialist and ICT consultant, is another honoree who has received acclaim for his work as a software developer and coding instructor. Safiya Alkali Ajikolo, a 14-year-old girl who won an award and was named the Best girl for three years in a row, is also honored.

“These young people have shown incredible talent and inventiveness, and their accomplishments are an inspiration to all NCLC 2024 participants,” Salam said.

Numerous exercises aimed at developing leadership, decision-making, and critical thinking abilities will be part of the conference. Among the educational trips that participants will take is a trip to the National Assembly, where they will watch a legislative session and take part in a simulated session.

Plenary talks on leadership, financial literacy, child rights advocacy, and skill development will also be included during the event.
