Former Secretary to the Delta State Government, Chief Ovuozourie Macaulay has joined other Nigerians to appeal to the youth to
shelve the proposed nationwide protest.
Macaulay made the appeal in a statement issued to newsmen over the weekend in Asaba The former Delta State scribe urged the prospective protesters to rather engaged the government in a constructive dialogue rather than resorting to protest.
Recall that some faceless individuals have proposed a nationwide protest with effect from Aug. 1, 2024 over what called hunger protest.
He acknowledged that the economic hardships faced by Nigerians and the frustration that had sparked widespread concerned.
Macaulay, however, said that the country was too volatile for a nationwide protest, considering the negative impacts it would have on the economy.
“Protests, though a democratic right, must be considered carefully in the context of their potential of negative impact.
“Are the organisers of the protest guaranteeing the possibility that it will not be hijacked by hoodlums, which if hijacked will lead to destruction of properties and government infrastructures.
“Delta State is a developing state, engaging in a protest might lead to the destruction of some few infrastructural developments we have achieved in our dear state.
“As a Labour Leader, in the past, I have lead several protest which were neither hijacked nor lead to destruction of infrastructures that we have in the state.
“Fifth columnist are waiting to portray the protest in a way that might jeopardise the current democracy that we are practicing in Nigeria,” he said.
Macaulay, however, urged the youth to embrace dialogue stressing that any negative implications of the protest would aggravate the current hardship in the country.
