Shehu Sani, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former senator for Kaduna Central, has said that President Bola Tinubu is unlikely to be defeated in the 2027 presidential election by any single opposition candidate.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, Sani emphasized that only a united opposition coalition could challenge the ruling APC. He argued that without a merger or alliance among major opposition parties, Tinubu would likely win by a landslide if he seeks re-election.
“There is no way to dislodge a ruling party without a coalition,” Sani said. “The opposition must set aside their narrow interests for the greater good of democracy.”
He noted that key opposition parties such as the PDP, Labour Party, NNPP, and SDP have so far shown little interest in forming a coalition. If this continues, Sani predicted that APC would dominate the 2027 election. “They lost in 2023 due to disunity, and the same outcome is likely in 2027 unless they come together,” he added.
Sani also criticized Nigeria’s political landscape for lacking ideological depth, saying party affiliations are often driven by personal ambition rather than shared values. “Political parties in Nigeria are mere vehicles for individual aspirations. Their manifestos are similar, and politicians switch parties without consequence,” he stated.
He concluded by warning that more defections to the APC are imminent due to ongoing internal conflicts within opposition parties, stressing that it is up to those parties—not Tinubu—to maintain unity and retain their members.
