The Senate convened an emergency plenary session on Monday to adopt the vote and proceedings of the last plenary, held last Thursday.

The sitting commenced at 11:55 am with about 54 senators in attendance.

The emergency plenary was convened to gazette the confirmation of the ten resident electoral commissioners and passage of the 2023 supplementary budget for President Bola Tinubu to sign it into law.

The gesture to speedily gazette the confirmation of the electoral commissioners into law is to prevent the court from stopping the confirmation process.

The votes and proceedings on the confirmation of the electoral commissioners was not adopted and gazetted before the matter appears in court, there is a high probability that an aggrieved person could secure a court injunction to stop their swearing in.

In order to avoid this, the Senate quickly summoned its members to an emergency plenary to adopt the vote and proceedings of the last plenary so that the confirmation of the electoral commissioners and passage of the supplementary budget will be gazetted and transmitted to the president for assent.

Upon adoption of the vote and proceedings of the last Thursday plenary, the upper chamber moved into presentation of bills and motions.

The lawmakers debated on the need to mandate schools to locate their Creche and Nursery classes to the ground floor of their high rise building.

Adebule Oluranti (Lagos West) who sponsored the motion said a toddler, David Udo died after falling from a high rise building at Emerald International School, Aba, Abia State.

The second motion debated was on the urgent need to dredge River Benue in Adamawa State. This motion was sponsored by Abass Iya (Adamawa Central).

At 12:58 pm, the Senate Majority Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele moved a motion that the senate should go into closed door session.

The Senate therefore went into a closed door session at about 1 pm and resumed sitting at 1:40pm.

Upon resumption from the closed door session, the Senate adjourned the plenary till tomorrow.
