‎The Senate, on Thursday, held a public hearing on a bill seeking to establish the Federal University of Science and Technology, Korokorosei, Bayelsa State.
    ‎
‎The hearing, organised by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund chaired by Senator Muntari Dandutse, is aimed at expanding science education and addressing skilled manpower deficit.
    ‎
‎Declaring the hearing open, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said the proposed university must be assessed beyond its establishment.
    ‎
‎Akpabio, represented by the Deputy Minority Whip, Senator Ibrahim Mustapha, stressed the need for sustainable funding, adequate facilities and effective administration.
    ‎
‎He said Nigeria needs institutions capable of turning research into industrial production, reducing dependence on imported technologies and equipping youths with globally competitive skills.
    ‎
‎According to him, Niger Delta’s greatest resource is its human potential, adding that the university could help address environmental degradation and develop solutions for riverine communities.
    ‎
‎He identified opportunities in cleaner energy, environmental protection, agriculture and fisheries, urging that institution should produce graduates whose innovations will drive national development.
    ‎
‎Earlier, Chairman of the Committee, Senator Dandutse, said hearing provided an inclusive platform for stakeholders to contribute to bill.
    ‎
‎Dandutse said the committee would examine governance structure, funding arrangements, academic focus, staffing, infrastructure and compliance with tertiary education laws.
    ‎
‎Sponsor of the bill, Senator Benson Konbowei, said proposed university would address shortages of skilled manpower, especially in science and technology.
    ‎
‎He said Nigeria must train more professionals locally rather than rely on foreign manpower to meet technological and industrial needs.
    ‎
‎Also, Technical Adviser to Governor Douye Diri, Mr Timidi Wariowei, said Korokorosei in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area has existing infrastructure including school buildings, health facility, hotels and landing jetty to support take-off.
