The House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora Matters has formally requested the Canadian Government to take legal action against Amaka Patience Sunnberger, a Nigerian expatriate residing in Canada, over recent hate speech accusations.
In a letter dated August 28, 2024, addressed to James Christoff, Canada’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, the committee—chaired by Tochukwu Okere and Biodun Omoleye—expressed grave concern regarding Sunnberger’s threats against Nigerians in Canada. The letter, also representing the Nigeria-Canada Parliamentary Friendship Group, cites a viral TikTok video where Sunnberger is heard inciting violence against Yoruba and Edo ethnic groups, including advocating poisoning their food and drinks.
The letter outlines several demands:
1. Prosecution: It calls for Sunnberger to be prosecuted under the relevant sections of the Criminal Code of Canada for her incitement to violence and genocide.
2. Public Condemnation: The lawmakers urge the Canadian government to issue a public condemnation of Sunnberger’s statements, reinforcing Canada’s stance against hate speech and violence.
3. Collaboration: They request collaboration between Canadian and Nigerian authorities to prevent any potential escalation of violence resulting from Sunnberger’s comments and to ensure justice is served.
The letter emphasizes the importance of maintaining the strong bilateral relationship between Canada and Nigeria, which is based on mutual respect for human rights and the rule of law. The lawmakers stress that Sunnberger’s actions jeopardize these values and expect a robust response in line with Canadian and international laws.
