Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff dies at 81

Jimmy Cliff, one of the defining figures of reggae and a key force in bringing Jamaican music to global audiences, has died at 81. His wife, Latifa Chambers, confirmed his death on Monday, saying he passed away after a seizure followed by pneumonia.

In a statement posted on his official Instagram page, she expressed gratitude to those who supported him throughout his life, adding that fans around the world had been a source of strength during his career.

Across more than four decades, Cliff wrote and performed songs that blended reggae with folk, soul, ska, and rock. His work often confronted political and social issues, including poverty, injustice, and war. A gifted multi-instrumentalist, he became known worldwide through hits such as “You Can Get It If You Really Want” and “The Harder They Come.”

He reached a new level of influence with the 1972 film “The Harder They Come,” which he starred in. The movie drew partly from his own experiences growing up in poverty and introduced both Cliff and the sound of Jamaican music to an international audience.

Many consider him the most significant figure in reggae after Bob Marley, with whom he collaborated early in Marley’s career.

Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, said the country was taking a moment to honor Cliff, describing him as “a true cultural giant whose music carried the heart of our nation to the world.” He noted that Cliff’s work inspired generations and helped build global respect for Jamaican culture.

Holness added, “Walk good, Jimmy Cliff. Your legacy lives on in every corner of our island and in the hearts of the Jamaican people.”
