Rabat picked as host city for Nigeria-Gabon World Cup playoffs

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will play their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff fixture against Gabon in Rabat, Morocco, on Thursday, November 13, after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed the Moroccan capital as the official host city.

CAF’s announcement ends weeks of speculation over the venue after Morocco was earlier named host nation without details on the exact city or stadium. Journalist Osasu Obayiuwana confirmed that the Olympic Stadium in Rabat has been selected for the matches.

The knockout-format playoffs will feature three matches; two semi-finals and a final. In the first semi-final, Nigeria will take on Gabon, while Cameroon will face Congo DR in the second semi-final, both scheduled for Thursday, November 13. The winners of these encounters will meet in the final on Sunday, November 16, to determine the team that advances to the 2026 World Cup.

The Rabat Olympic Stadium, which hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, is widely regarded as one of the finest football arenas on the continent.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles, among Africa’s most successful football nations, will be seeking to secure their place on the global stage once again as they aim to qualify for the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup.
