In a recent development, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s FSB security service troops conducted a raid on Prigozhin’s Wagner Headquarters in St. Petersburg, leading to the discovery of £38 million in cash stored inside a van and two buses.
Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the mercenary group, confirmed that the substantial amount of money found during the raid belongs to Wagner. While he did not disclose the exact value of the stash, earlier reports from Russian media estimated it to be around £38 million, equivalent to 4 billion rubles.
In an audio message on Telegram, Prigozhin explained that the funds were intended to cover compensation payments for Wagner soldiers who had been killed. He further mentioned that the group has been exclusively operating with cash for the past decade, in adherence to their contractual agreement.
Following the raid, several restrictions have been imposed around the Russian capital, as decreed by the governor. This comes as the Wagner group advances northward towards Moscow after seizing a crucial military base earlier in the day.
Subsequently, Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin announced a ceasefire, stating that their march towards Moscow had been halted.
